Speaker profile: Tara Smith
Tara Smith is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, where she holds the BB&T Chair for the Study of Objectivism.
A specialist in legal, moral, and political philosophy, her most recent book is Judicial Review in an Objective Legal System. Other books are Ayn Rand’s Normative Ethics: The Virtuous Egoist; Viable Values: A Study of Life as the Root and Reward of Morality; and Moral Rights and Political Freedom.
Smith’s scholarly articles span such subjects as individual rights, justice in everyday life, friendship, pride, friendship, the nature of objectivity, and the value of sports to the serious fan.
Smith’s current research concentrates on philosophical questions emanating from the First Amendment, particularly in regard to religious freedom and speech freedom. At Texas, for several years Smith organized the Free Speech Dialogues series, and she continues to run the Free Speech Essay Contest for undergraduates each spring.
